The formation of united Europe

1951
April 8
Six countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Luxembourg, sign the Treaty of
Paris that creates the European Coal and Steel Community(ECSC). These six countries will henceforth be known as the "Six".
1952
May 27
In Paris, the Six sign the Treaty of the European Defense Community (EDC).
July 27
The Treaty of Paris enters into force.
1954
August 30
The French Parliament rejects the EDC Treaty.
October 20
The Western European Union (WEU) enters into force.
1957
March 25
The Six sign the Treaties of Rome which create the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM).
1958
January 1
The Treaties of Rome enter into force and the Commissions of EEC and of EURATOM are set in Brussels. The Parliament and the Court of Justice are common for all the three Communities (ECSC,EEC and EURATOM).
1959
June 8
Greece applies for membership in EEC.
1960
May 3
The Stockholm Convention which creates the European Free Trade Assiociation(EFTA) enters into force. Austria, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom take part in EFTA.
September 20
The Council of the Six adopts the first rules of the European Social Fund.
1961
July 31 to August 10
Denmark, Ireland and United Kingdom apply to join the European Communities.
September 1
The first regulation on the free movement of workers from members countries within the Community enters into force.
1962
January 14
A common agricultural policy is set up to create a common market and agricultural and financial solidarity through the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF).
April 30
Norway applies for membership in the European Communities.
1963
January 14
President de Gaulle claims that France doubt the political will of United Kingdom to enter the Community. After some days later, the negotiations with the applying candidates are suspended.
1965
April 8
In Brussels a Treaty is signed to unite the three executives of ECSC, EEC and EURATOM.
July 1
France breaks negotiations for financing the common agricultural policy. The French government recalls its permanent
representative and the French delegation will not take part in meetings of the Council or the Permanent Representatives Committee.
1966
January 28 to 29
The "Luxembourg Compromise" is reached. France takes back its place in the Council in exchange for mantaining the unanimity when there are very important interests on the table.
1967
May 11
United Kingdom applies again to join the Community, followed by Denmark, Ireland and Norway. President De Gaulle is still against the British request.
July 1
The Treaty which unites the three executives of the European Communities enters into force. There is now just one Commission and one Council, but they continue to act according to their own rules for each Community.
1968
July 1
The custom union enters into force. The last custom duties will remain for another 18 months and a common custom tariff is introduced to substitute the national custom duties in trade with the rest of the world.
1970
June 30
In Luxembourg the negotiations for Denmark, Ireland, Norway and United Kingdom to enter the Community start.
October 27
The member countries approve the Davignon Report on political cooperation. The task is to have a Europe which speaks
with a single voice on all the major international problems.
1971
March 22
The Council adopts the Werner Plan to strengthen the coordination of the economic policy. The members countries have to harmonize their budget policies and to reduce the margins of fluctuation among their currencies.
May 12
The Council introduces a system for trading agricultural products among the member countries to maintain a united common agricultural market.
1972
January 22
Signing of the Treaties of Joining of Denmark,Ireland,Norway and United Kingdom. They are then ratified by the National Parliaments,
except in Norway where a referendum rejects the membership.
April 10
The Bale agreement creates the monetary snake: the Six decide to limit the margin of fluctuation among their currencies to 2.25%.
1973
January 1
Denmark, Ireland and United Kingdom joins the European Communities. There are now 9 members.
1975
March 18
The Council creates the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and a Regional Policy Committee.
June 12
Greece applies to join the Community.
July 22
Signature of a Treaty which assigns to the European Parliament complete budget powers and sets up the Court of Auditors.
December 1 to 2
The European Council decides on the election of the European Parliament by universal suffrage by 1978, on passport union and
single Community representation for the North-South dialogue.
1976
February 9
The Council decides in favour of the Greek membership in the Community.
July 27
Formally opens the negotiations for Greek accession.
September 20
The rules regarding the universal election of the European Parliament are approved.
1977
March 28
Portugal applies to join the Community.
July 28
Spain applies for membership in the Community.
October 25
Inaugural meeting of the Court of Auditors.
1978
April 7 to 8
Copenhagen European Council: agreement for the first direct elections of the European Parliament.
May 19
The Commission is favorable to the accession request of Portugal. The negotiations start on the 9th June.
November 29
The Commission is also favorable to Spain's request of membership in the Community.
December 4 to 5
During Brussels European Council the European Monetary System(EMS)is based on the European Currency Unity (ECU).
1979
February 5
The negotiations with Spain starts.
March 13
The EMS enters into force.
May 28
The acts regarding Greek membership in the Community are signed at Athens.
June 7 to 10
First direct elections of the European Parliament.
June 28
The Greek Parliament ratifies the Accession Treaty.
